Caviro Group presents the Fifth Edition of the Sustainability Report, the results of the carbon assessment, decarbonization strategies, and projects according to ESG criteria.
Faenza, April 23, 2024 – “THE REFLECTION OF CONCRETE ACTIONS” is the title ofannual event dedicated to sustainability projects of Caviro Group, this yeas in collaboration with MIC (Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche) International Museum of Ceramics which hosts, in addition to the permanent collection, an exhibition of over 200 works created by the inventor of “Made in Italy,” the great Gio Ponti.
“You learn things made by hand. Nothing that isn’t first in the hands.” is the famous quote of the Italian architect and designer that not only embodies the value of craftmanship, but also perfectly reflects the tangible commitment, the reflection of concrete actions of the Caviro Group towards people, thesupply chain and the environment.
The event, introduced by a performance of theRomagna-born artist Paolo Cevoli, exceptional host and moderator, saw the participation of multiple voices and interventions: among the guests, the journalist and Head of Sustainability Will Media Mattia Battagion, Directon Studies Center Unioncamere Emilia-Romagna Guido Caselli and the General Director Confcooperative Fabiola Di Loreto.
During the event, the Group’s new Manifesto “Il cerchio della vite” was presented, which summarizes the cooperative’s model of perfect economic circularity, reinterpreted to tell the Group’s commitment regarding its CO2 footprint and the carbon assessment process. Indeed, the calculation of CO2 emissions – Scope 1, 2, 3 – for the entire Group (Faenza, Forlì, Savignano sul Panaro, and Fumane) was revealed, along with the milestones achieved in 2023 and the further commitment to meet the SDGs targets of the UN Agenda 2030.
Carlo Dalmonte, Caviro Group President, sais: “Today, it is crucial to aim for a concrete ecological transition. It is up to us and the entire supply chain we represent to spread good practices and concrete actions aimed at regenerative development, a bigger vision. That’s why we have decided to account for our carbon assessment, the first necessary step towards defining decarbonization strategies to take action and trigger positive change.”.
The Group stands out, both nationally and internationally, as a precursor of a circular economy model “Dalla Vigna alla Vigna”, continuously evolving: a virtuous circle that eliminates the concept of waste starting from the vineyard, where every raw material is considered a precious resource, processed, and transformed into a new natural ingredient to be put back into circulation, a cycle that unites humans and the environment, grapes and the earth, the present and the future.
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2023: FIFTH EDITION
Caviro Group represents the largest wine cooperative in Italy with 11,100 winegrowers, 26 wineries in 7 regions of Italy, a total extension of 37,500 hectares of vineyards corresponding to over 600,000 tons of grapes produced (8.5% of Italian grapes), and a turnover of 423 million in revenue.
The Italian market remains the main reference, representing 70% of total sales.
Wine accounts for 63% of revenue (approximately 270 million in turnover), the alcohol, musts, and tartaric acid area accounts for 24%, while the share related to the energy and environment sector is at 13%. Over 96% of the value generated in fiscal year 22/23 was distributed to stakeholders.
Also, the 2023 Sustainability Report, now in its fifth edition and certified by a third-party organization, has been conceived from an ESG perspective, aiming to comprehensively illustrate the results achieved in terms of Governance, Environment, and Society, and everything surrounding the world of CAVIRO.
SUPPLY CHAIN SUSTAINABILITY
The Group’s actions extend along the entire value chain and derive strength from the bond with the member producers. Caviro strengthens what is already being done and what will need to be done to address climate change and today’s challenges: it is committed concretely, together with its member wineries and the entire supply chain, to support and promote sustainability practices in a narrative that embraces Italy from north to south.
Caviro Group takes concrete and tangible action on no fewer than 10 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda through wide-ranging initiatives and projects, addressing the material issues that are most important to the company and its stakeholders. This year, the Group adds goal number 17 – partnership for the goals – to strengthen its commitment to building partnerships with the public, private, and academic sectors for sustainable development.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Out of the waste that Caviro processes each year – 600,000 tons – over 99% finds new life: this is the circle of the vine. At Caviro, everything comes full circle: every day, the protagonists of the supply chain are engaged in a process, constantly evolving, to return to the earth every residue of the winemaking process to enhance it and transform it into noble material, until complete utilization and Zero Waste, with a perspective of deep regeneration where the ultimate goal is the next step.
For water resource sustainability, the Group plans to implement a protection plan through the installation of increasingly water-efficient technologies, monitoring consumption to reduce waste, reusing process water after suitable treatment, and integrating processes to increase recovery synergies. A concrete commitment that translates into 621 million liters of water recovered and not drawn from aquifers, equivalent to 42% of the Group’s total water requirement.
So, every residue of the process becomes a resource, and like water, the soil is also a protagonist in this journey of regeneration. From the natural decomposition of organic matter – effluents and waste from the agro-food supply chain alone – which is transformed through a process of biooxidation, we produce valuable natural fertilisers equivalent to 135,000 tons (35,000 tons of biodigestate, 36,000 tons of calcium biosulfate, and 64,000 tons of three different types of amendments: ACV, ACM, ACFA).
CARBON FOOTPRINT
Another step in Caviro’s sustainable development journey is the calculation of its own carbon assessment across all operational sites: Faenza (RA), Forlì (FC), Savignano sul Panaro (MO), Fumane (VR) with the aim of defining the corresponding carbon footprint and implementing concrete decarbonization strategies. The calculation was made in collaboration with ClimatePartner using data referring to fiscal year 22/23
Silvia Buzzi, HSE and Sustainability Manager Caviro Extra comments: “Accounting for carbon footprint is the first fundamental step to allow organizations to quantify their emissions in terms of greenhouse gases, expressed in tons of CO2 equivalent, understand their impact on the climate, and set reduction or offsetting goals.
Caviro’s concrete decarbonization strategies involve two areas of action:
- emission reduction, through self-generation of energy from renewable sources or the purchase of green energy, the use of increasingly efficient technologies, dedicated collaborations upstream and downstream of the supply chain;
- emission compensation, through the purchase of carbon credits that finance projects aligned with the SDGs.
SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Caviro is committed to creating an ethical and stimulating work environment whose purpose is to enhance and support employees.through training and awareness on sustainability and cybersecurity topics, the definition of succession plans to address turnover, and the enhancement of internal communication to stimulate a sense of belonging. Social sustainability also materializes in actions aimed at the end consumer, focusing primarily on aspects related to product quality and food safety, as well as relationships with suppliers, especially local ones, to make a significant contribution to supporting the local economy.
In line with its cooperative nature, Caviro has confirmed its contribution to the entire community and the territory through charitable initiatives, events, and sports, social, and cultural activities. The place that hosted the event – the MIC International Museum of Ceramics – is an example of this. At the conclusion of the presentation of the V Sustainability Report, guests enjoyed the exhibition “Gio Ponti. Ceramiche 1922-1967. Over two hundred works by the inventor of Made in Italy” accompanied by Claudia Casali, Director of the MIC International Museum of Ceramics.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
There are several recognitions that underline and reward the Group’s commitment: Caviro has been officially included in the list of “Most Climate-Aware Companies 2024” in the food and beverage sector. The ranking – compiled by Corriere della Sera, Pianeta 2030, and Statista – rewards companies that have most significantly reduced the ratio between CO2 emissions and 2023 turnover.
Caviro has also distinguished itself among the leading Italian companies in the green economy with the project “Legàmi di Vite” for the Premio Sviluppo Sostenibile 2022, and has also been awarded the Premio Impresa Ambiente, the highest Italian recognition awarded to companies that, in managing their business, make an innovative contribution in terms of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Lastly, the mention of Index Future among the 44 Italian companies that best illustrate their governance and the European Award for Cooperative Innovation in the “Bioeconomy and Circular Economy” category, which recognized CAVIRO as one of the most innovative cooperatives in Europe.
